- Hey! I'm the one on the left having some fun on a trip to Morocco! Thanks for stopping by! Having retired from the corporate world, my days are now packed with photography, blogging and seeing the world around me. My photography is varied...a reflection of who I am...my love of people...experiencing different lifestyles and cultures...with a little abstract thrown in!

look up!
Doesn’t it seem we’re always in a hurry and we often don’t take the time to look up?
Well looking UP in NYC is a must. Otherwise you’ll miss out on a number of architecturally significant buildings in styles spanning many historical and cultural periods.
One of the many reasons I love living in this city is the architecture and it starts within my own neighborhood, the Upper West Side. Great afternoon event learning about historical buildings within a couple blocks from my front door. The bonus? Lead by local Upper West Sider, photographer and professor of photography at NYU…John Hart. Thanks to Landmark West for putting it together and for John’s photography and history lessons!
Some favorites…

They certainly don’t make them like they used to and thank god we have preservation groups ready to pounce at any moment!
only in nyc…
You know…I’m only gone for a few days…I come back to elephants roaming around Columbus Circle in the Upper West Side of Manhattan!

The beginning of a public art exhibit that stretches over five miles thru the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Thanks to the Broadway Mall Association, a non-profit that beautifies and maintains the medians on Broadway, for making it possible! Check it out through April 2012. Can’t wait to see these guys covered in snow!

a beatle kinda day
Today would’ve been the 71st birthday of John Lennon. Planned or not, it’s nice to have a touch of happiness to offset the sadness! Congrats to Paul McCartney and Nancy Shevell!

i sad
Why is it that Steve Jobs’ death has had such an impact on me? I didn’t know him. Never followed him in the technology arena, but who doesn’t love their ipod or Mac? The same thing happened to me after Amy Winehouse’s death. Never had I even listened to her music, now I can’t get enough of that bluesy voice. Or Elizabeth Edwards or Farrah Fawcett…the list goes on…
Obviously the ones that affect us the most are the ones that have touched us in some way. Is it their contribution? Is it their age? Is it knowing the grief that is left behind with their loved ones? Is it the media? What is it exactly? I didn’t know these people, yet their passing always shakes me up for a few days…
Finally, yesterday I went by the Apple store in my hood.

69th street transfer station, nyc

Junk! An eye sore! Get rid of it!
These words are spoken by many people when you mention the 100 year old transfer station located on the Hudson River on the Upper West Side. A reminder of the past…and that’s exactly what I love about it.
Once a transfer terminal for the New York Central Railroad, it facilitated the movement of freight from railyards to river barges known as “car floats” in the day.
To me, the transfer station in the city equals an old run down barn on a farm in the country or old lighthouses along the coast. Full of history and memories for many…

an historical event on the upper west side
Fairway, one of the many neighborhood grocery stores to choose from in the hood, is open 24 hours a day…365 days a year. Until Hurricane Irene.
Closed this morning at 10:00 to allow their employees time to get home before the MTA shut down. Bet this is the first time since 1954!

good morning and welcome home!
Yep, this was my alarm this morning now that I’m back in MY city!

Who needs an alarm clock when you have chirps and sunflower seed hulls flying in all over the bed! (Yes, it’s true…I don’t put the screen in my window) So to get back at em…I googled cardinals and started playing audio clips of female cardinals! LOL…watch out said that bird!!!
i ♥ popover cafe

Before I showcase a business on my blog, I gotta really really like it. Now keep in mind, I don’t like to photograph food. Let’s leave that to the experts. I love quality food, but I’m not a foodie nor a food critic. All I’m doing is sharing the discovery of a great place with good service and good food. Period. Nothing more, nothing less.
Popover Cafe is on the corner of West 86th Street on Broadway in the Upper West Side. My hood. Their doors opened in 1981 with eight tiny tables and NO stove. Thirty years later Carol Baer now seats 100 in her restaurant and yes, she now has an oven. Many ovens I’m sure and I bet BIG ovens. Her mantra: Keep it simple, use the freshest quality ingredients and serve the best food possible. Mission so accomplished.
Consistent service, pleasant atmosphere and after multiple tries I can tell you the coconut-almond crusted challah french toast and the lemon twist pancakes are to absolutely die for. And that’s only a start to breakfast. I didn’t even tell you about the popover…
magic eye
I’m so in love with the vintage peephole in the front door of the apartment…along with the glass door knobs. It was an omen as they go perfectly with my Salvation Army piece with the adorable drawer knobs that a friend of mine gave me a couple of years ago. (Thank you Madam….)
