ellis island
Imagine seeking freedom, opportunity and holding on to hope of a new life over a century ago. This was my second visit to the Ellis Island Immigration Museum here in NYC and I’m already eager for my third. The tour is well done, providing an atmosphere to relive the immigration experience as if you were a new arrival.
It’s hard to imagine though the relief upon arrival, yet the uncertainty if you’ll pass through the process and be allowed to stay. Will you or a member of your family be turned away? Can you imagine the feeling when your grandmother isn’t allowed, turned away never to be seen again?
The museum collection is fascinating. Objects include the personal belongings of immigrants, staff and visitors, memorabilia, fine art, documents, photographs, and architectural elements found during the preservation work. Public Health Service work on Ellis Island is represented in the collection by items such as crutches, hospital bed, medicine bottles, etc. found on site.
You absolutely must include this if you make a visit to see Lady Liberty! You’ll always remember it.
(This week’s challenge for Bella’s 52 Photo Projects was to chase the light and experiment with shadows. The lighting here was incredible and made for a perfect opportunity!)

light in the dark
Week six of Bella’s 52 photo projects, looking for light…
Captured on a walk along the Hudson River at sunset…
makes you wonder where these objects came from…
where they’ve been…
just floating along in life…
the man in a pink tutu
This is why I love NYC so much!
This is week five of Bella’s 52 photo projects.
We were instructed to look for pink and she said “anything goes!”
letting the sunshine in… 2~52
Let the Sunshine In is this week’s prompt for Bella’s 52 photos project…It could be light, seeping into the dark…shadows…still life…lines…as it dapples and fades…golden or bright…capture the sun shining in your life…even in our darkest moments, the sun – the light, can find its way through the cracks. This also leads me into my Unravelling class this week as well. We were asked to notice treasures in our life. Something that has meaning and an emotional value, taking the focus off ourselves and taking a look at the inanimate objects that hold stories about ourselves. Something that will catch our eye and perhaps bring a smile. As I read both of their posts there was a touch of shininess that caught my eye and it immediately provided the answer to both prompts.
This hand blown glass paper weight captured my attention some 50 plus years ago. You see my parents bought this paperweight early in their marriage as they passed through Natural Bridge, a huge gorge in the mountainous terrain in Virginia. An area famous for honeymooners back in the day. I can remember being a very little girl and climbing up in the desk chair in my parents bedroom and turning it, rubbing it and thinking about what it would be like to run around in that magical kaleidoscopic forest inside. How elated I was when my mom gave it to me a few years ago. It’s so precious to me.
Before signing off for today, as mentioned in my previous post it was incredible to be in the thick of the protests on Tuesday. It gives me the opportunity to play in my fantasy world of being a photojournalist, ha! But in all seriousness, these opportunities are a dream for photographers as there’s absolutely no concerns from people about taking their photograph. Finishing up the afternoon with “occupy” and all the chaos, afterwards I attended my first weekly dharma gathering at the Shambhala Meditation Center. What a change from all the megaphones, the pushing and shoving into a tranquil meditative paradise. A perfect ending to my evening. I had the privilege of hearing Sangyum Agness Au talk on “The Pain of Pain: Not Leaving Well Enough Alone.” But that’s a story for another time…

beginnings ~1/52~
Always up for a challenge, I’m joining in on Bella Cirovic’s 52 photo projects. For 52 weeks, she provides a photo prompt and we display our work and meet others with the same shared passion. So this week is week 1 of 52! And here we go!
Her first prompt of the “new year” is about beginnings…What are you beginning right now?, she asked. I’ve been thinking a lot lately about printing my photographs. I love creating and sharing (posting to my blog) but I find that most of my work is hoarded and buried deep into my hard-drive. I recently read an article and kept a portion of it as a reminder. Unfortunately the author’s name escaped me, but what was said really opened my eyes to the importance of printing. “We need to print it, look at it, live with it, and react to it. And we need to share it. The downfall of the digital revolution is that so much of our work never makes it past the pixels.”
So with that reminder and Bella’s prompt this week, I WILL PRINT! I’m looking forward to sharing the other 51 prompts with you as well, so I hope you’ll follow along! Have you started doing something new lately? Would love to hear about it!
