paying homage to moleskine
Attention all paperholics!
The famous Italian notebook company Moleskine has opened its first U.S. store! And guess where? Yep, right here in New York City. Right here in my neighborhood at the Time Warner Center at Columbus Circle.
Yes, it’s small…but it’s mighty! Besides the full Moleskine collection, there’s the special editions and hard-to-find Moleskine tools. Think Gogh, Picasso, Hemingway…as they’ve been used by artists and thinkers over the past two centuries!
handcrafted millinery in the east village
A multi-cultural human bazaar. I read that once in a description of the East Village in Manhattan. How true, how true.
A warm spring like afternoon couldn’t have been more perfect to ramble around and explore this grungy, hip and oh so fascinating area of the city. Walking along East 12th street between Avenue A and Avenue B, she caught my eye. The lighting, the hat, the suppleness of the skin, the eye lashes, the lips. She immediately had me under her spell.
It was if I could feel my grandmother’s presence. You see my grandmother was a buyer for yarns and crafts at a large department store in my hometown of Roanoke, Virginia.
She loved to knit, crochet, create and was an expert in her field. She had style, a presence, a couture look about her. When visiting her, I would often be at the bus stop when she arrived home from work watching for those long slender legs to step down those steps to the curb. The shoes, the knit skirts and coordinating tops and oh…the hats. I would always be mesmerized, regardless of how many times I saw her getting off that bus.
Seeing that hat in the East Village brought me right back to those moments. As I was photographing a voice behind me…That’s my studio, would you like my card? A brief chat and we were both on our way. Hours later I researched Artikal, the studio, and learned the owner grew up in northern Virginia and from a young age was inspired to create. She had been influenced by her grandmother, an award-winning dressmaker who loved to crochet. Years later here she is in the East Village having mastered millinery techniques and now ships hats all over the world.
Now, if I can just get inside of her “by appointment only” boutique to take more photos of those incredible hats.
Stay tuned.

the town dump
Did you ever see the movie, Night at the Museum? Ben Stiller plays a divorced father trying to settle down, impress his son and find his destiny. So as a newly recruited night security guard at the Museum of Natural History he discovers that an ancient curse causes the animals and exhibits on display to come to life and wreak havoc. Well that movie comes to mind whenever I visit the Town Dump in Cave Creek, Arizona.
It’s really hard to describe the Town Dump, but every time I stop by I think about these characters coming to life at night time when no one is around and wreaking all kinds of havoc in this little western town! So here’s a few of them just to give you a feel for who lives there. Just imagine!
And by the way…if you’re in the area stop by for a burger at Big Earl’s! There’s always a character or two hanging around there!
laduree on madison

My first macaron experience was a number of years ago in a little shop in Paris called Laduree. Now quite honestly…it’s not really my kind of sweet. However, a friend was visiting from Sweden and she happens to be a macaron lover and adores Laduree. So to surprise her, I headed over to the Upper East Side and entered their cute little shop on Madison Avenue. What? No wait? Perhaps because I got there right at opening time, as I’d read the line forms around the block with expected wait times of 30 to 45 minutes just to enter. Very parisian, in pale green with lots of mirrors and dark wood…adorable! And yes, she was very surprised and loved them!
Check it out the next time you’re in the neighborhood!

fifth avenue holiday window displays
Window shopping on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan is about as close as I get to many of the department stores that line this famous avenue. What an amazing holiday tradition to stop and enjoy when Manhattan’s biggest stores finally reveal their holiday displays!
Here’s my interpretation along Fifth Avenue!

holiday shopping at grand central
Looking for a taste of the quintessential New York in holiday shopping? Then you must stop in at Grand Central’s Vanderbilt Hall and check out over 70 specialty vendors during this month. Of course my favorite being the Moroccan goodies from the Mushmina girls and another vendor that caught my eye? These adorable hand-made hats! There’s something for everyone!

experienced a shoegasm lately?
Come on in! We’re having a sale!
Oh my…I cringe at the thought on how much I spent on shoes during my corporate years! Now I can barely find a pair that fits due to my bunion issues (compliments of my dad) and possibly the last several years of flip flops(?) All I know is…I haven’t had a shoegasm lately. You?
