west side community garden

15,000 tulip bulbs? 30 varieties? And this is just the beginning of the season?

Welcome to the West Side Community Garden nestled between buildings on West 89th Street between Columbus and Amsterdam in the Upper West Side of NYC. This week I attended my first meeting and as a new member of this community garden, it’s exciting to be a part of the history of this neighborhood!

The garden, a vacant lot once filled with garbage and stripped cars, was officially (and finally) deeded in the 1980′s after years of (and I’m sure painful) negotiations between the city, developers, and Trust for Public Land. Construction finally began in fall of 1987 and the West Side Community Garden was ready for the neighborhood in the summer of 1988. Today the garden is devoted primarily to flowers, but also small plots for vegetables and herbs are awarded to dedicated gardeners who give their time and efforts in keeping this little treasure up and running.

The garden celebrates its 21st year of TULIPS this month with the blaze of more than 30 varieties and more than 15,000 blooms! Throughout the summer many activities are planned such as Sunday afternoons “Music in the Garden,” an art and craft festival and activities for the children (Shakespeare Festival) to name a few.

Today, the garden is just beginning to come alive. Stay tuned for continued updates as the season progresses. So looking forward to getting a little dirt under the nails and of course capturing the beauty throughout the next several months!

Priority seating

You know my hat is off to Williamsburg, Brooklyn and any other neighborhoods doing this. A couple of weekends ago, Bedford Avenue was shut down for two days to provide a car-free event called Williamsburg Walks. Why? To make us rethink our public space and to offer a space to celebrate the hood. Activities like perfume mixing, pickle preserving and sewing demos, children’s games, music and much more. Very neighborhoodie.

Throughout the avenue, chairs were placed everywhere. Now, not just any chairs. We’re talking special chairs. Like the one above. Priority seating for people who want conversation.

Another creative and excellent idea by a local urban designer by way of Brisbane, Australia. Her public art project is all about exploring ideas of public transport and public seating as social spaces. For Yen Trinh, her mission is to create a culture of friendliness. “Conversations in public spaces amongst strangers and friends present endless possibilities to build connections, learn of each other, create community, and just make someone’s day a bit more brighter. Friendliness is often contagious.” Well said Yen, well said!

Hmm…I’m wondering if she’s met Luke from the UK?

New York Photo Festival 2010

Attended the New York Photo Festival in DUMBO, a new residential district in Brooklyn which I think one day will far surpass Soho! (btw, DUMBO stands for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Underpass.) The festival started a few years ago and lasts for a period of four days. Unlike other festivals which focus more on established photographers or previously produced works, the New York Photo Festival is focused on providing a platform for discovering contemporary photography for previously unseen work. Great exhibits and fun to see what new artists are up to!

My first morning out…15 blocks of Street Festival

Finished my morning errand and crossed over to Avenue of Americas.  It’s simply amazing how they block off major streets for all kinds of events.  Here’s a taste of 15 blocks!
