summer in the city – sketching…

Anita Manhattan at Dr. Sketchy's Philadelphia

Take a couple of hot models and some drawing supplies…toss in a couple of drinks and guess what ya get?  Yep, an evening of FUN!

Wouldn’t you know that it all started as a little event in Brooklyn and soon became a full blown movement! Looks like these sketch events are in many cities throughout the U.S. and in London, Tokyo, Rome and Melbourne and perhaps others by now…So check it out in your city, I promise you a fun time!

At Dr. Sketchy’s Philadelphia we were entertained by two fabulous drag queens… Anita Manhattan (how appropriate!) and The Notorious OMG.  Both were so much fun and trust me, even if you can’t draw (like me!) you’ll have a blast.  I sure did!

summer in the city – philly’s magic gardens

Looking for a unique Philadelphia destination?  Head to the famous South Street and check out the Magic Gardens created by visionary and award-winning mosaic mural artist Isaiah Zagar.  I just couldn’t get over how Philly has embraced the arts and certainly Zagar has been instrumental in helping to create this city into a thriving creative community it is today.

The garden includes a fully tiled indoor space and a massive outdoor mosaic sculpture garden that spans half a block.  Thousands of glittering mirrors, hand-made tiles, folk art statues, bicycle wheels, colorful glass bottles to name a few.  As you make your way through the maze there are a number of sightings of Zagar’s personal experiences.  I’ll leave it at that…you can find that out when you visit!

As you walk along South Street mosaic tile work is everywhere including the building that houses Zagar’s studio.  And guess who just happened to be working with a bunch of students that afternoon?  Yep, Mr. Zagar himself.  What a treat to meet him and chat with him and his students.  A character in his day – no doubt – and dearly loved by his students as they continued to mention how giving he was of the information he’d learned about the process over the years.  This is a must-see while in Philly!

Coming up…a session at Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School with two of the foxiest drag performers in Philly and the infamous Naked Bike Ride!  (and no…I didn’t partake in the ride…but trust me…it’s on the bucket list so one day it’ll happen!)

summer in the city – summerstage ends

Many times I’ve mentioned SummerStage in my blog…a program in Central Park compliments of the City Parks Foundation..offering free performances throughout the summer months.  You know summer has come to an end when the last concerts finished up the season over the weekend.  Just had to share some of the diversity between Saturday – Australia day (love my Aussies!) showcasing acts in contemporary music and Sunday – Jamaica’s 50th anniversary of independence with a day of Jamaican reggae music.

The people watching was PHENOMENAL!

A few favorites from down under day…

summer in the city – water

Intrepid

uss intrepid

The visual treasure hunt today is all about water…and there’s no better way to take in the views of the water by taking a long walk on the Westside Greenway – a path about 13 miles from the Staten Island Ferry to the George Washington Bridge all along the Hudson River here in NYC.  The USS Intrepid is just one of the many treats you’ll see along the way!

summer in the city – let’s hit the streets!

Summer Streets 2012

summer streets 2012

Nothing screams Summer in the City than Summer Streets in NYC!  Always look forward to August, as three consecutive Saturdays with nearly seven miles of NYC’s streets are opened for people to play, walk, and bike beginning on Park Avenue as far north as Central Park down south to the Brooklyn Bridge entrance.  One huge block party with people watching galore!

Chatted with these fellas who were walking to the court house to get married!  How cool is that?

Summer Streets

Yep, people watching at its finest…these guys were looking quite dapper on their morning stroll!

Good times and the day was BEAUTIFUL!  Enjoy the weekend!

summer in the city – work*

Impossible Project NYC

Remember the days of the Polaroid?  How sad that in 2008 production stopped on all instant film.  But with the Impossible Project to the rescue, the company bought the production machinery from Polaroid (located in the Netherlands) and today it produces new instant film products for use in existing Polaroid cameras.  There’s an office in Tokyo, Paris, Vienna and guess where else?  Yep, my city.  Right in the heart of Soho…can you imagine calling this place your “work?”

I sooooo want a Polaroid!!
