fleet week!

This morning’s wake-up call was a constant sound of whop, whop, whop…and out the window the sky was filled with helicopters moving up and down the Hudson River. Hmm…the last time this happened the President was flying in. Hmm…But that couldn’t be, isn’t he over in London playing with the queen?

It just felt like “something” was going on.

I took a long morning walk and as I made my way back through Riverside Park, along the Hudson River, I started to see small groups of policemen and their dogs stationed throughout the park. I’ve never seen them with their big guns aimed and somewhat “ready to fire.” But then again, I can’t say I’ve ever seen groups of policemen throughout the park, much less with dogs and big guns!

“Something” must be going on.

As I got closer to my building, I could see a small crowd of people gathered at the end of Pier 1 at West 70th Street with their cameras in tow.

OK, I’ve obviously missed “something.” “Something IS going on.”

Well that “something” happens to be Fleet Week! Who knew? (Must have been out of MY city this time last year.) So here’s what I learned:

Since 1984, NYC has held Fleet Week to honor the US Navy and Marine Corps. So today was the kick-off parade on the Hudson River with numerous activities to follow over the holiday weekend such as military demos, ship tours, aircraft fly overs, singing of the taps and much much more! Oh, and did I mention a city full of sailors? ♡

So stay toooned for more Fleet Week!

If you live near a naval base this is all too familiar to you, I’m sure. But having lived in southwestern Virginia and then Arizona for many many years, I must say this was a TREAT!

My dad, my sailor!

the andy monument, union square, nyc

Tribute to Andy Warhol by artist Rob Pruitt.

Mr. Pruitt explains…”Like so many other artists and performers and people who don’t fit in because they’re gay or otherwise different, Andy moved here to become who he was, to fulfill his dreams and make it big. He still represents that courage and that possibility. That’s why I came to New York, and that’s what The Andy Monument is about.”

Ahh…NYC…where dreams are made…

On display until October 2nd, check it out!
