My first – Carnegie Hall

I can’t believe that during the 20 plus years that I’ve been coming to NYC that I’d never been to Carnegie Hall. Well I fixed that! What a delighting evening! Thanks Amy for the tickets and your company during our fabulous dinner at Bar Bao! (I’m still thinking about the tender duck confit with the poached egg on top!)

Sara Taveres, a Portuguese singer-songwriter entertained us not only with her angelic voice, but with her warmth and beauty as well. Her music was romantic, intimate and relaxed, very feminine with a combination of rhythmic jazzy, ballad and African. Outstanding!

Where did GOTHAM come from?

I’ve had a few visitors to the den ask me about the term “Gotham.” I always knew it had something to do with Batman, but decided to do a little research.

Washington Irving was the first to apply the nickname “Gotham” to New York City, when he called it “the renowned and ancient city of Gotham” in an essay he wrote in 1807. The real origin of the name requires going back a bit further, but the nickname really became popular with the Batman comic books which appeared in 1939. We all know the title character was said to live in Gotham City, clearly recognizable as New York. Get it? Gotham, Batman, Robin….Gotham Girl.

Here’s the Gotham Girl (aka Robin) doing what she loves! Having a nice glass of French wine in a fabulous restaurant in Williamsburg. More on that area of Brooklyn in a future post!

Mosaic Man of the East Village

Over the past few days I’ve been exploring a little of the East Village, specifically St. Mark’s Place. It’s a jumble of CD stores, head shops, comic book shops, cafes and bars and regardless of what time you go it’s always crowded. After wandering around I started to feel as if my hood, the Upper West Side, seemed like remote parts of Kansas compared to this area. What a totally different scene and beat. I happened upon Mosaic Man. His current project was working on the base of a lamp post directly in front of Little Missionary’s Day Nursery that just happens to be the oldest, continuously operating non-sectarian nursery in New York City, providing quality childcare since 1896. Cool, huh? I must admit it is funny to write head shop and nursery in the same paragraph. :)

You never know what you'll wake up to!

Most of the time the sounds of garbage trucks picking up trash outside the Gotham Den is my morning wake-up call. Yes, I know…it’s a lovely sound. This morning was different. “Take 1…” “Take 2…” “Take 3…” was my alarm. Yep, movie in the making right outside the den! It was fun to watch all the takes as many neighborhood characters interrupted as the couple walked time and time again down the sidewalk. Only in NYC! FUN!

What better way to spend Saturday – Photography class!

Before I get to the photography class I have to tell you that Friday I took a new class at my gym called Core Motion. Well. It was defined as FUN. After the workout every bit of my body was soaked with FUN sweat…and I never would’ve dreamed I would wake up on Saturday and could barely get one leg out of bed much less my whole body. This was fun? I’m doing 60 mile bike rides with no soreness and I go to an hour class and my body feels like it’s been hit with a Mack truck! But I had to get moving because I had photography classes to go to!! So after I crawled in and out of the shower I made it to the subway headed for Tribeca. Steps. OMG. I’m sure I looked like some little old lady going up those steps as I emerged from the subway stop on Canal Street. Now the challenge was to find this place. I haven’t spent much time in Tribeca. Perhaps going to a restaurant or two and I do recall this is where JFK Jr. lived. It was a quiet morning. Lots of lofts, warehouses and an occasional cyclist making their way towards the Hudson River. After help from a couple of very nice people, I found the studio.

I opened the door. Yep, you guessed it. MORE stairs! ARGH!

The studio pictured below was very industrial, very cool. We’re not talking your typical hard chairs in a classroom environment. This was awesome!

It was a day of just hanging out. Just three of us with lots of 1/1 time with John. He critiqued several of my photos and I can’t believe how much I learned about my camera, photo composition and my inner desire to take even more photos! Yep, every day I pinch myself in this fabulous city. I’m so living the dream. Check out John’s site at www.JohnBentham.com to look at his work.

Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Prada, Chanel…

On Friday a friend of mine and I made our way to Chinatown to meet some other girls for a late lunch. As we walked along Canal Street we couldn’t believe the mass of people swarming towards us. Then we connected the dots after seeing a sea of Yankee shirts. Yep, we had encountered the end of the Yankee’s parade. (btw: I read that some NYC office workers got a little carried away and began tossing files and documents out the windows when they couldn’t get their hands on confetti. Pay stubs, financial information, a balance sheet of someone’s trust fund showing $300,000 in stock…oops!)

Anyway, as we slowly moved along Canal Street so many people were approaching us and whispering…“Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Prada, Chanel“…I can only imagine if you expressed a little interest where one might end up. As many times as I’ve been to Chinatown over the years, I’ve never had so many of these offers, one right after the other, block after block. Light bulb! They were out in droves because of the parade. Duh!

As we crossed Canal I noticed a policeman moving towards a group of guys that had open suitcases of designer bags and sounds of zip zip zip and the boys were scurrying like crazy. So if you’re interested in purchasing designer bags, I understand those bags are not the quality of the ones like the bag whisperers sell. So keep that in mind the next time you’re shopping for purses in Chinatown!

Central Park – 843 acres of pure beauty

Central Park laps

Today my cycling group didn’t meet due to rain because once again the weather forecasters were clueless. It was a beautiful day. I took the opportunity to do some riding in Central Park. Remember this slice of heaven is just a few steps from my front door. And for those of you who don’t know… the park is closed to traffic on Monday through Friday, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., and weekends from 7:00 p.m. Friday to 7:00 a.m. on Monday. So no worries about vehicles. How cool is that? A full lap around the park is 6.1 miles and offers both hilly and flat terrain giving us cyclists varying levels of difficulty. So I cycled 4 laps – a total of 24.4 miles. I captured a few fall scenes that if you could see in person it would just take your breath away! Oh, I also had fun racing the Boat Basin Trolley. I won, but something tells me he enjoyed the fun and let me win…

Over 100 posts and going strong in NYC!

I can’t believe that I passed the 100th blog post a few posts ago. It cracks me up to know that the Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog – Coney Island post back in July is the most popular. People find their way to this post every single day! Go figure! So here’s another photo for all you Coney Island hot dog lovers out there!

Spent Sunday with 2 million people!

NYC marathon
What better way to spend a Sunday than with 2 million people to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the NYC marathon! I’ve read various numbers, but it looks like there were over 40,000 runners. The energy in the air was just amazing! It was very surreal to be on Central Park West early in the morning with the street blocked from traffic.

But within no time Central Park South became a huge festival as runners began to make their way to the finish line.

And a shot of father/daughter waiting, I’m sure, for mom to finish!
