Black Friday in NYC
Ahhhhhhh….now it’s tis the season. I was so happy to see that Christmas trees didn’t take over Thanksgiving. So when they showed up bright and early Friday morning it felt just right.

I spent the afternoon in Soho dodging my way through all the crowds. It was CRAZY!! Before I headed home I was so close to Broome Street Bar I just had to partake. Poor me.
I’m off to sunny Arizona very early Sunday morning! First time back in six months!

John Fogerty at the Beacon
I grew up listening to the music of Creedence Clearwater Revival. Their music took me through 2 serious boyfriends and my first marriage. Somehow I lost touch with their music over the past 15 years, so when I saw that John Fogerty was playing at the Beacon Theatre, I jumped at the chance to get a ticket. I arrive at the Beacon Theatre early Tuesday morning thinking there would surely be some available tickets. Nope, all sold out. But I learn a secret about getting last minute tickets from the little cutie pie in the box office. (if I told you, I’d have to kill you) So I score one later in the day!
First, let me give you a little info on the Beacon. It’s only a few blocks from the Gotham Den (can life get any better??) and it opened in 1928. Sadly it closed in 1981, but over the past several years the theatre has completed a three phase restoration project. It’s now remodeled and revitalized and yours truly got to see the restoration in all its glory.
I arrive promptly at 7:15 for the 7:30 p.m. show only to find a handful of people seated. Hmmm….did I miss something? The warm up band starts promptly at 7:30 and they play about 5 heavy metal songs which is not my favorite music, but I have to say they sound pretty good. But where are all the people? They told me this was a sell out?!?
So I learned a very “local” lesson – according to my new friends sitting beside me. New Yorkers are busy and usually don’t take the time to make it to the warm up show. Oh, now I get it. You take your time getting off from work, have a cocktail, and slowly make your way to the show arriving just in time for the main event. I like that. So after an intermission I make my way to get a glass of wine and return to my seat and the party begins. For the next 30 minutes the theatre was just one big cocktail party. You stand at your seat and mingle with the people in front of you, in back of you, and beside you.
The lights dim and then out comes JOHN FOGERTY and for the next couple of hours we are entertained like there’s no tomorrow. We dance and we sing. We watch John, who happens to be 64 years old, run across the stage and strut his stuff like a teenager. He never let up. Song after song brought back so many long-forgotten memories. Born on the Bayou, Bad Moon Rising, Who’ll Stop the Rain, Lookin Out my Back Door, Down on the Corner, Have You Ever Seen the Rain…too many to list.
It wasn’t until I was reading a review of his tour did I learn that this particular night was his final date on his fall tour. How exciting to be a part of it! Let the midnight special shine a everlovin light on me…

Catching a glimpse of the parade
You gotta love that people will find all kinds of locations to catch a glimpse of the parade!
I’ll share a few that I captured this morning:
On a fire escape in their jammies :

Out their windows and on top of their roofs:

And this little fashionista didn’t have a good vantage point, but was just so precious! OK, I’m done with Thanksgiving now.

Macy's parade right in my backyard!
Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Just how lucky can a girl get. I just came in from spending the last several hours out and about enjoying various vantage points of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade! I have so many black and blue marks from pinching myself all morning long. I’ve been watching this parade since I was a little girl (we know how long ago that was!) and for three hours I was smack in the middle of chaos and loving every minute of it! It’s a cloudy, but nice day with temperatures in the 50′s. Just perfect!
Now I’m sitting here in the comfort of the den watching it on TV, viewing what I saw several hours ago since the parade started just a few blocks away here in the Upper West Side. Since they changed the route this year it’s taking a while to get to Macy’s Department store.
I’ll just share a few of my favorite photos!
First, Spiderman in Columbus Circle:

Along with the Energizer Bunny from last night’s viewing:

And of course the day wouldn’t be complete without Santa passing by at the end of my street!

Macy's balloon inflation night
The first Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade was in 1924 and animals were borrowed from the Central Park Zoo to give it a little flair. After the first couple of parades, when it became apparent that the animals weren’t as kid-friendly as Macy’s might have liked, they asked a theatrical designer to come up with some animal-shaped balloons. Felix the Cat, one of the first, was made at the Goodyear Tire company in Ohio in 1927. For a few years the balloons were released after the parade and anyone who found one was entitled to a reward at Macy’s. But this was stopped in 1933 after a couple of mishaps with the balloons. By 1934, Walt Disney characters such as Mickey Mouse and Pluto joined the parade. During WWII, the rubber balloons were donated to the war effort and the parade didn’t resume until 1947. It then began to develop as we know it today: floats, celebrities, bigger and better balloons, and national TV coverage.
So to prepare for the big day, imagine my surprise when I learned that the balloons are inflated just a few blocks from the Gotham Den! I headed out and immediately was in a sea of strollers. (Oh, I guess this is all about kids and not necessarily all about ME.) Slowly I made my way towards the American Museum of Natural History. And I mean very slowly. Two full city blocks showcase these huge characters that are slowly blown up and brought to life. Nets and sandbags are used to keep the balloons from escaping during the night. So here are a few photos to give you an idea of their size. And these were the smaller ones!

And of course we have the Energizer Bunny:

And towards the end of my evening…an encounter with Mayor Bloomberg:

China and back
Well not really, but almost! I bought a fabulous pair of vintage glasses at a cool shop in the East Village. They turned me on to an optical place in Chinatown with great prices. So off I went to get a deal. As I emerged from the subway I was met with the aroma of fish and knew I was definitely in the right place. Right smack in the middle of Chinatown and I made my way slowly to Mott Street. It’s always busy, but this particular area was chaos. Store front after store front of fish, vegetables, dried goods, you name it. The fish were so fresh they were still flapping and the frogs were still ribbiting!

Nestled among all the busy storefronts is a sizable eye glass business, Optical 88. I must say that my initial service impression was outstanding and you just can’t beat the prices. I’ll head back down in in a day to pick them up. Note I said DAY and not WEEK like most places.

Boo-boo on Columbus
Oops…somebody had a boo-boo. It seems I’m always in for a surprise whenever I leave the Gotham Den and round the corner to Columbus. Here’s what I found today!

Back in the city…only in NYC
Returned from Virginia and headed out to the farmers market yesterday for some of those fabulous NJ/NY apples. Came around the corner from the Gotham Den and look what I encountered! Was able to reach for my camera to capture this interesting character just before the light changed. There was no parade…I’m still trying to figure it out! You gotta love this city!

Virginia
ADORABLE. I love these little bluebirds. This one hung out for a good while checking out the views on the deck of my parents house.
Back in the city on Saturday!
My new apple
Headed out to Virginia on a misty Saturday morning and was able to capture a shot of the grand opening of the new Apple store in my hood! Can’t wait to visit when I return next week. Only two short blocks from the Gotham Den!
