Nothing like…fresh…local…

BasilThere’s a small farmers market a few blocks from the Gotham Den…I’m getting so spoiled with fresh peaches, Jersey tomatoes, New York blueberries, Vermont Mozzarella…Oh, and the cherries I purchased in Chinatown?  OMG!!  Fabulous. Just fabulous.

The living room

Met an Aussie last week.  She invited me to come to her first NYC performance which happened to be at the Googies Lounge above the Living Room,  located in the lower east side. (A trip to this venue is an absolute requirement to hear some outstanding new talent!)  Fab performance by Jonatha Brooke, a Bostonian who travels to play throughout the world and my new amiga, Trysette.  Awesome performance by both!  Trysette is now off to play in London.  Go girl!   Trysette and I also learned about riding the subway at the wee hours of the morning.  GET A CAB!

My reward

Well after walking 80 blocks I was certainly deserving of a treat, so I stopped in a small bistro and had one of my favorite meals!  A glass of Gruet sparkling wine, Prince Edward Island mussels and frites!  Yum Yum.

A beauty in my backyard

I’m referencing my book,The Best Things to do in New York City – 1001 Ideas, and found a gem right in my backyard.  Well kinda…only 40 blocks to and 40 back to see the largest cathedral in the world. So I trekked up to the upper upper west side to view the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine. Everything about this cathedral is huge.  It holds up to 5,000 people across the length of two football fields and the dome could comfortably contain the height of the Statue of Liberty.  It’s still unfinished despite the fact that it was started in 1892.

On the grounds, as shown in the picture, is the Peace Fountain depicting the struggle of good and evil. The fountain is encircled by small, whimsical animal figures cast in bronze from pieces sculpted by children. Very cool.

More importantly, this cathedral is in an area that is probably 95% Hispanic and African-American. Walking into this neighborhood really brings the awareness of being the minority. So it was a good opportunity to experience the tables being turned…an experience all of us should have as often as possible.

What recession?

Popped into the Apple store today.  Another luxury…about a 15 minute walk from the Gotham Den.  (Rumors have it that one is coming soon to the Upper West Side only a few blocks away!)  Anyway, this place was packed.  Not just looky lou’s, but buyers!

Rockin good music and lightning bugs!

My last venue of the evening takes me to SummerStage in Central Park. Internationally acclaimed for presenting world-renowned and emerging talent from around the globe and New York City’s own backyard, the Central Park SummerStage two-month season has a calendar full of culturally diverse programs in music, dance, word, film, and comedy. Tonight Bettye LaVette performed for over an hour. If you aren’t familiar with her, she performed at Lincoln Memorial for the Obama Inaugural celebration where she sang “A Change Is Gonna Come” as a duet with Jon Bon Jovi. She really had the crowd rockin out!  This was my 4th SummerStage concert so far for the season. The weather was perfect and the night was filled with lightning bugs!  I haven’t seen lightning bugs in so many years. Definitely brought back lots of fun childhood memories when we used to smear them all over us like war paint and run around all lit up!

NO thongs allowed!

After the movie I headed over to Central Park to view the annual Central Park Underwear Run. It’s a 1.7 mile fun run that takes place every year on the Friday before the Nautica New York City Triathlon. No timing chips, no expensive race gear, just 500 people running around in their underwear. However, NO thongs allowed as it’s advertised that people don’t look as good as they think they do!  Everyone was presented Nautica boxer shorts. The icing on the cake?  Why a special appearance – The Naked Cowboy! (More on him in a future post!) Another typical summer evening in New York City! Now I’m off to SummerStage to finish up my night.

The Paris Theatre

The first of the post-war movie houses constructed in Manhattan, the Paris Theatre opened in 1948 and is directly across from the Plaza Hotel and Central Park.  The auditorium has blue velvet walls, excellent projection and sound AND popcorn for only $4.00.

The Paris Theatre is one of the very best places to see art house films in New York. As its name implies, The Paris has an affinity for playing foreign films (especially French films). Many premieres have been hosted by the Paris Theatre.

I saw Cheri starring Michelle Pfeiffer.  Good movie, not great.  But… I’m a Michelle Pfeiffer fan so it was a great spend of time!  Not to mention experiencing this fabulous theatre! Now I’m off to the Central Park Underwear Run!

Friday night…Four hours…what's a Gotham Girl to do?

Only in NYC can you view a movie, watch 500 people run in their underwear, and hear a fabulous Summerstage performance in the heart of Central Park…all in 4 hours!  A beautiful 72 degree night.  Too much to report in one post.  They all deserve their own. So here they come!
